Essential gear for long rides: my go-to list
When I head out for a long ride, I don’t just make sure my bike is ready, I also double-check what I’m bringing with me. Long rides can be unpredictable, from flat tires to sudden weather changes, or even unexpected energy dips. So having the right essentials in my bag makes the difference between a stressful day and an enjoyable adventure. Being prepared means I can handle (almost) whatever comes my way. Whether it’s a quick snack to recharge (yum I’m always hungry), a spare layer to stay warm, or tools to fix a mechanical issue.
Minitool
I always carry this compact tool on my rides, so I have the essential tools for roadside repairs available whenever I need them.
Food & hydration
- Energy gels or bars – quick fuel when you start running low. They’re easy to carry, digest quickly, and help maintain performance during long session.
- One bottle of water + one bottle with electrolytes – hydration is key, especially in the heat. Keeping fluids up is crucial, especially when sweat rates are high. Water keeps you hydrated, while electrolytes replace lost salts and help prevent cramps, keeping your body running smoothly from start to finish.

Clothing & extras
- Light windproof or rain jacket – having a lightweight windproof or rain jacket on hand keeps you comfortable and protected, whether it’s a gust of wind or an unexpected shower.
- Arm warmers or leg warmers – These small, easy-to-carry layers are perfect for adapting to changing temperatures.
- Spare socks – After riding or running in wet conditions, slipping into a fresh pair of socks can make a huge difference. Dry feet prevent blisters and keeps me feeling fresh for the rest of the adventure.
Electronics & safety
- Phone – for content and for emergencies (just in case)
- Bryton – for navigation and tracking my ride
- Front and rear lights – you never know if your ride will last longer than planned.
- Health insurance card & ID
My little “secret”
- A small amount of cash – for coffee, ice cream, or an emergency transport ride.
Final thoughts
When I pack my cycling bag for a long ride, I always think in terms of safety, comfort, and energy. As long as I’ve got the basics covered, I can relax and fully enjoy the ride without worrying about “what ifs.”
Having the right essentials from hydration and quick fuel to weather protection and a few extra comforts, gives me confidence on the road. It’s not about overpacking; it’s about being prepared for whatever the ride brings, so I can focus on the experience, the scenery, and the joy of cycling. 🙂
