My Zipp Carbon Wheels Review

When I got my AURUM road bike last autumn, these Zipp wheels came with it.

After months of use, I wanted to share my honest Zipp wheels review that’s based on my experience with them. Keep reading for a full picture.

What Are the Zipp 303S Wheels?

The Zipp 303S is a carbon disc-brake wheelset designed for modern road and all-road riding.

Key features:

  • 45mm rim depth
  • Hookless carbon rim design
  • Tubeless-optimised system
  • Wide internal rim width (23mm)
  • Designed for 28mm–32mm tyres
  • Disc brake only

Zipp positions the 303S as a performance-focused but accessible carbon wheelset, meaning bringing aero benefits and wider tyre compatibility without going into top-tier race pricing like the Firecrest models.

Zipp 303S Performance: Do They Actually Feel Faster?

What stands out to me the most isn’t explosive acceleration, but how naturally the bike holds its speed. Holding tempo requires slightly less effort compared to standard alloy wheels, especially on flatter sections or mixed elevation roads.

With a 45mm rim depth, the 303S offers:

  • A clear aerodynamic advantage without being extreme,
  • Strong momentum once you’re moving and
  • A balanced mix of speed and control

Despite being aero-focused, the 303 S doesn’t feel heavy. On climbs, the bike is still very responsive. Out-of-the-saddle efforts feel sharp, not sluggish. It’s actually a good middle ground between lightweight climbing wheels and deeper aero race wheels.

Comfort & Tubeless Setup

One thing I genuinely appreciate about the Zipp 303 S is how well it works with modern tyre setups!!

The wide, hookless rims let you run wider tyres and lower pressures. I’ve been riding 28mm tyres on them, and they really suit this wheelset.

Slightly lower pressure gives you more grip and takes the edge off rough roads. And with tubeless, the whole ride feels smoother.

For a carbon performance wheelset, the level of comfort honestly surprised me. A mix of speed and comfort is probably a reason why many riders describe the 303 S as an “all-road” wheelset.

Zipp 303S – What you should know before buying?

Before buying something like the Zipp 303 S, there are a few things I think are worth knowing.

Hookless Rim Design

The 303 S uses a hookless rim. In simple terms, that means you need to pay attention to tyre compatibility.

You’ll need:

  • Tubeless-ready tyres approved for hookless rims
  • To stay within the recommended pressure limits

It’s not designed for traditional high-pressure tube setups, so if you prefer running inner tubes at higher pressures, this probably isn’t the right match.

Are Zipp 303 S Wheels Worth the Money?

The Zipp 303 S isn’t a budget wheelset.

I’d say it is more of an investment upgrade. You’re paying for carbon construction, aero development and a modern rim design that supports wider tyres and lower pressures.

My advice?
If you’re just starting out or not cycling regularly, you probably don’t need this level of wheelset, however if you are cycling consistently, care about how your bike feels and want a noticeable upgrade in both, speed and comfor this is where you start to feel the difference.
