Cycling on Rab Island: The Bike-Friendly Getaway in Croatia (+ Where to Stay)

If you’re searching for the perfect cycling destination in Croatia, let me introduce you to a hidden gem: Rab Island. I spent five days there on a cycling holiday, and honestly, it exceeded every expectation.
Rab might be a relatively small island, but what makes it special is how diverse and bike-friendly it is. You’ll find sandy beaches, rugged coastline and just enough elevation to keep your legs activated. 🙂

It’s also known as “the Happy Island”, a nickname that comes from its sunny climate, lush nature, and laid-back Mediterranean energy. And after cycling there for a few days, I can honestly say I get it (and you will too!). There’s something about cycling along the coast, with open roads and sea views, that just puts you in a great mood.

Why Rab Island is Perfect for Cycling

If you’re into road cycling with coastal views, Rab should absolutely be on your radar.

I visited it in April, which turned out to be ideal for me:

  • no crowds,
  • quiet, low-traffic roads,
  • perfect temperatures for rides

For anyone who enjoys that “island cycling vibe” Rab delivers. You can go full training mode or just a relaxing zone 2 rides.

From a cycling perspective, the island offers:

  • rolling terrain ideal for endurance rides,
  • short climbs for interval efforts,
  • scenic coastal routes,
  • plenty of spots to stop (coffee, photos, or quick sea views).

My absolute favourite Rab Cycling Route: From Mišnjak to Lopar

One of my favorite rides was a diagonal route across the island, starting near the Mišnjak ferry and heading towards Lopar.

This route is a great mix of everything:

  • some climbs (nothing too intense, but enough for a solid effort)
  • constantly changing views

Want to hear the best part?? You pass multiple beaches along the way. So don’t be surprised if your “training ride” turns into a few scenic stops.

If you’re planning a cycling trip to Rab, this route is definitely worth adding to your list.

Where to Stay on Rab Island: Valamar Padova Hotel (Bike-Friendly Accommodation for Cyclists)

When it comes to where to stay on Rab Island for a cycling holiday, we stayed at Valamar Padova Hotel, and honestly it ticked all the boxes for us.

This is not just “bike-friendly” on paper, it’s genuinely set up for cyclists:

  • secure bike storage (accessible only with your room card),
  • option to rent bikes directly at the hotel,
  • reeeally helpful staff who give great recommendations for cycling routes.

That last one deserves extra emphasis! The team is incredibly friendly and genuinely helpful when it comes to planning your rides. So big KUDOS to them! 🙂

Food for Cyclists: Half Board Dining with Options for Everyone

We had half board (breakfast + dinner), and the food was delicious! Yes, i am a huge foodie, may I add. There’s also a strong focus on seafood (perfect if you’re into that), but the selection is wide enough that everyone finds something, including options for lactose-free, gluten-free, and other dietary needs.

So yes, all in all, we were very properly fueled!

Prime Location in Rab Town for Easy Cycling Access

The hotel is located right in Rab town, which makes it an ideal base for cycling.

From here, you can, head out along the coast, climb inland route or explore different parts of the island easily.

Basically, you can start your ride straight from the hotel in any direction, which is exactly what I want on a cycling trip.

Recovery & Wellness for Cyclists: Spa, Sauna, Pool & Gym

Cycling every day = recovery is key. Right?

Okay, real talk. I know how important recovery is, but I’ll admit, I’m also the type of person who sometimes does not put much effort into recovery (please, do not be like me).

But here? The hotel’s wellness area is just too good to ignore. Everything is super nicely designed, calm, and honestly exactly what your body needs after hours on the bike. So it kind of became my little post-ride ritual.

They’ve got multiple saunas, a pool, and proper chill zones where you can switch off for a bit.

They also offer massages, which we fully planned to book… but somehow ran out of time (still slightly regretting that decision, not gonna lie).

And if you’re someone who likes to hit the gym also on vacation, there’s also a fully equipped gym. I ended up having a proper sweaty session there.

So, if you’re coming here for a cycling trip, just know: this is one of those places where you’ll actually take recovery seriously, without even trying too hard. 🙂

Rab Island Cycling Holiday: Why I’d 100% Come Back

Rab turned out to be exactly what I didn’t even know I needed! Mornings started easy, with coffee and delicious breakfast, then straight on the bike with the sea basically following us the whole way.

What made it even better was coming back after a ride and knowing everything is taken care of. Staying at Valamar Padova just made the whole experience feel easy. You can tell they really understand what a cycling day looks like.

And that’s what I’ll probably remember the most. Not just one specific moment or a ride, but the overall feeling. Great food, the sea, and that relaxed island energy! So, now I fully get why they call it the Happy Island. 🚴‍♀️🌊

P.S. One thing I didn’t expect, but actually found really cool- the hotel also has a Maro Club for kids. So if you’re coming as a family, it’s a pretty ideal setup. You can go out for a ride, while the kids are looked after by animators and have their own fun going on. And from what I saw, they were seriously enjoying it!
